Christmas in Asturias from San Juan de la Arena: sea, lights and tradition at Las Mimosas del Nalón

Christmas in Las Mimosas del Nalon

Some places celebrate Christmas with noise and haste. In San Juan de la Arena it feels different: beside the sea, between the Cantabrian breeze, the Nalón estuary and the calm of the villages of the Bajo Nalón.

At Las Mimosas del Nalón we invite you to slow down, share meaningful time and discover Asturias through all five senses. A different kind of escape for couples, families and friends, just 10 minutes from Asturias Airport.

Christmas by the sea: an experience to awaken the senses

In December, the landscape changes its mood. Walks beside the estuary invite you to breathe deeply, the lights shimmer on the water and conversations linger without anyone watching the clock. Begin the day with a leisurely breakfast, explore seaside towns and Christmas markets, then return to the warmth of a country home prepared with care.

  • Sight: sunsets over the mouth of the Nalón and illuminated façades.
  • Sound: the winter sea, the wind in the trees and the stillness of the surroundings.
  • Smell and taste: Asturian cuisine, cider, traditional sweets and unhurried breakfasts.
  • Touch: the warmth of a welcoming home after a day of exploring.

L’Anguleru: the seafaring Christmas tradition born in L’Arena

San Juan de la Arena is the birthplace of L’Anguleru, the Asturian Christmas character linked to the sea and the elver-fishing tradition. Every Christmas, his story fills the village with excitement and makes a visit to L’Arena especially memorable for families travelling with children.

Stroll around the harbour, wander through the decorated streets, walk to the mouth of the Nalón and discover a Christmas celebration with an identity of its own. It tells the story of our community, our seafaring heritage and a distinctly Asturian way of sharing.

Things to do at Christmas from Las Mimosas del Nalón

1. A day between L’Arena and San Esteban de Pravia

Start at the harbour in San Juan de la Arena, continue to Los Quebrantos beach and admire the estuary from its viewpoints. Then cross over to San Esteban de Pravia to walk beside its historic coal-loading structures and discover one of Asturias’ most distinctive industrial and maritime landscapes.

2. A coastal Christmas: Cudillero, Cape Vidio and Playa del Silencio

A perfect day trip combining charming villages, cliffs and the sea. Cudillero is especially beautiful in winter and, when the weather is kind, Cape Vidio and Playa del Silencio offer views that stay with you long after the journey.

3. Christmas lights and culture in Avilés, Oviedo or Gijón

Avilés is around 25 minutes away and is ideal for an afternoon exploring the historic quarter, festive lights and Christmas atmosphere. Oviedo and Gijón add markets, nativity scenes, local shopping and cultural events. Visit a different city each day and return to sleep beside the Nalón.

4. Indianos architecture and rural scenery: Somao, Pravia and Santianes

For those who prefer an unhurried walk, Somao, Pravia and Santianes offer Indianos architecture, heritage, gardens and quiet roads through the woods. A peaceful nearby plan, perfectly suited to a restorative escape.
