Avilés, Salinas and Cabo Peñas: a journey between history, sea and infinite horizons

Discover three ways to experience Asturias in a single day

Some days in Asturias smell of salt, taste of cider and are filled with stories.

Days when we swap trails for streets steeped in centuries of history, mountains for squares bustling with life, and forests for cliffs that seem like the edge of the world.

From Las Mimosas del Nalón, one of the most comprehensive excursions is to tour Avilés, Salinas and Cabo Peñas. Three very different places that, together, showcase the essence of central Asturias: culture, sea and wild nature.

A perfect plan for those who want to discover another side of Asturias without straying too far from our accommodation.

End of the day

I'm returning to Las Mimosas del Nalón to rest and relive the experience.

Avilés: the city that surprises everyone

Many travellers arrive in Avilés with few expectations and leave utterly enchanted.

Its historic centre is one of the best-preserved in northern Spain. Arcaded streets, squares full of terraces, noble buildings, churches and nooks that invite you to wander aimlessly.

Centuries of history coexist here with a surprising cultural energy.

As you wander down Galiana Street, Plaza de España or Rivero Street, you'll discover a lively, authentic, and elegant city.

And suddenly the Niemeyer Centre appears.

White, bright and futuristic.

A space designed by the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer that has become one of the cultural symbols of Asturias.

A different piece of advice

If you want to discover curiosities, legends and secrets about Avilés before visiting, we recommend the videos from Asturian creator Ana Santos, who shares little-known stories and corners of the city on her social media. Thanks to her content, you'll discover places that many visitors overlook.

What to see in Avilés

  • Galiana Street.
  • Spanish Steps.
  • Rivero Street.
  • Ferrera Park.
  • Centro Niemeyer.

Essential photos

Salinas: where Asturias looks out to sea

A few minutes from Avilés appears one of the most emblematic beaches in Asturias.

Salinas is light, surf and horizon.

Its immense sandy beach, promenade and relaxed atmosphere make it a must-see stop.

Everything here invites you to slow down.

Walking by the sea.
Having a coffee with a view.
To see the surfers challenge the waves.
Or simply sit and listen to the Cantabrian Sea.

It's one of those places where Asturias shows its most open and luminous side.

What to do in Salinas

  • Walk along the promenade.
  • Visit the Philippe Cousteau Anchor Museum.
  • To have a drink by the sea.
  • Enjoy the sunset over the beach.

Cabo Peñas: Asturias's northernmost point

If there is a place capable of transmitting the strength of the Cantabrian Sea, it is Cabo Peñas.

Here the cliffs rise above the sea and the horizon seems infinite.

The wind, the sound of the waves and the immensity of the landscape create a feeling that is difficult to describe.

It's no coincidence that it's one of the most photographed places in Asturias.

The Cabo Peñas Lighthouse marks the northernmost point of the Principality and offers some of the most impressive views along the entire Asturian coast.

It's the perfect place to end the day.

Take a deep breath.

Look at the horizon.

And remember why Asturias leaves a mark.

Cabo Peñas is one of the lighthouses we most recommend visiting when you stay at Las Mimosas del Nalón.

Things to do in Cabo Peñas

  • Visit the lighthouse.
  • Walk the coastal paths.
  • Watch seabirds.
  • Enjoy the sunset over the Cantabrian Sea.

Three Asturias in one day

This route allows you to discover three distinct ways of understanding Asturias.

Three different places united by the same essence.

And after a day full of experiences, returning to Las Mimosas del Nalón means returning to calm, to rest, and to the tranquility of feeling at home.
