A day in Asturias to feed the senses: from Las Mimosas del Nalón to Cudillero, Playa del Silencio, and Cabo Vidio

There are days that aren't measured in hours. They're measured in aromas, in landscapes, in unhurried after-dinner conversations, in the salty sea air on your skin, and in that very Asturian feeling of being exactly where you wanted to be.

From Las Mimosas del Nalón, in San Juan de la Arena, we suggest a day trip to experience Asturias at a leisurely pace. No rushing. No trying to see everything. Leaving room to pause, look, breathe... and improvise.

Asturias isn't conquered with a list. Asturias is a delight to the senses.

Waking up slowly at Las Mimosas del Nalón

The day begins as beautiful days should: without an emotional alarm.

You open the window and the north wind blows in. That clean air that smells of green, of river, of the nearby sea. At Las Mimosas del Nalón, breakfast isn't just the first moment of the day: it's an invitation to slow down.

Freshly baked bread, hot coffee, quiet conversation, and that soft light of Asturias that seems to ask you for one very simple thing: don't rush.

Here begins our personal proposal for enjoying Asturias in a day. A plan for couples, families, friends, or travellers who want to experience the true North.

First stop: Cudillero, the village that looks painted on the sea

After breakfast, we set off for Cudillero, one of those unforgettable fishing villages.

From the Garita viewpoint, Cudillero unfolds before the eyes like a colourful amphitheatre. Its brightly coloured houses climb the hillside as if they all wanted to peek out at the harbour, creating a visual cascade that contrasts with the deep blue of the Cantabrian Sea. As you descend through its cobbled streets, the air fills with an unmistakable mixture: the smell of salt, old wood, and fresh fish just arrived at the port.

We recommend parking at the port, so the return journey is easier.

The narrow streets invite you to get lost. On every corner, the sound of an old door, the murmur of the waves or the lively voices on the terraces of the Plaza de la Marina envelop you. And the viewpoints offer that postcard that every traveller takes away in their memory: the Cantabrian Sea in the background and the "pixueta" soul beating in every corner.

Our recommendation: don't arrive with a fixed plan. Wander around. Go up to a viewpoint and feel the breeze on your face. Go down to the harbour. Browse in the small shops. Look without buying anything... or buy something that will remind you of this day when you return home.

Shops and crafts in Cudillero

To take home a souvenir with soul, we recommend looking for local crafts, nautical trinkets, pottery, jewellery or decor inspired by Asturias.

An interesting stop is the Black Pottery of Cudillero – Alfar del Zarru, linked to the Asturian black clay tradition. You can also visit gift and craft shops like Arte y Mar, in the Plaza de San Pedro, which specialises in typical items, souvenirs and Asturian crafts. One of the most comprehensive shops is that of Julieta and Arte y Mar.

And remember: the best souvenir isn't always an object. Sometimes it's a conversation, an unposed photograph, or the sound of seagulls over the harbour.

Dining by the sea at Casa Miguel, La Concha de Artedo beach

After Cudillero, the body starts calling for food, drink and the sea.

Our proposal is to eat at Casa Miguel, next to La Concha de Artedo beach, in Lamuño, Cudillero. A perfect place to extend the morning with the flavour of the Asturian coast. It's best to book., from their website calling +34 664618012

Here the plan is simple: sit back, gaze at the sea, and let the food do its thing. Fish, rice dishes, produce from the Cantabrian coast, a leisurely after-meal chat, and that uniquely ours pleasure of eating without watching the clock. A very peaceful stroll along the beach.

Because travel is also this: bread on the table, the sound of waves nearby, a raised glass and the certainty that not much more is needed.

Afternoon of silence at Silencio Beach

After eating, we continued towards one of the most exciting landscapes on the Asturian coast: Playa del Silencio.

Its name says it all.

It's not a beach to arrive at, take a photo and leave. It's a place to stay still. As you go down the path, the immensity of the cliffs that protect it makes you feel small, but at the same time free. There is no sand here, but pebbles, and the sound the sea makes caressing the stones creates a natural, relaxing and comforting symphony.

The water, a crystal-clear emerald hue, contrasts with the rugged rock and wild vegetation. It is an almost untouched spot where the wind whispers through the crevices and the sea imposes its rhythm. To gaze at the cliffs. To feel that blend of wild beauty and deep peace that only Asturias knows how to bestow.

Go down slowly if conditions permit. Wear comfortable footwear. And, above all, let the scenery speak for itself. If the tide is high, it's only worth seeing from the viewpoint.

There are places that are visited. The Playa del Silencio is heard.

Sunset at Cape Vidio

As the day begins to say goodbye, one of the most special moments of this route arrives: the sunset at Cabo Vidio.

Standing on the edge of cliffs almost 100 metres high, the Cabo Vidio lighthouse is a natural balcony to infinity. The sky turns golden, bathing the seascape in orange and reddish hues that reflect in the waves. The sea changes colour. The cliffs seem to ignite from within.

The wind blows strongly, bringing with it the pure scent of the ocean, and the roar of the Cantabrian Sea crashing against the rock sends a shiver through you and fills you with energy. And suddenly you understand why some places need no explanation.

Cabo Vidio is perfect for ending the day peacefully, sitting on one of its benches, taking a deep breath, and watching the sun set over the Cantabrian Sea.

Don't be in a hurry to go back. Stay a while longer. Sometimes, the best part of the journey appears just when you're no longer looking for anything.

And if you fancy more: a horse riding tour in Oleiros

If your body is craving adventure, nature, and a different kind of experience, you can cap off your day – or save it for another – with a horse riding route through the forests and cliffs of the Oleiros area. We collaborate with Jesus, from Rutas a Caballo, and he's sure to give you a fantastic experience. We can book it for you if you'd like.

It's a lovely plan to experience Asturias at a different pace: the gentle gait of the horse, the scent of damp earth and pine forests, the sea breeze caressing your face, and the spectacular views towards the natural beach of Oleiros. Feeling a connection with the animal and the freedom of riding alongside the sea is an experience that awakens all the senses.

A different way to connect with the landscape. No noise. No screens. Just nature, sea, and path.

Return to rest at Las Mimosas del Nalón

After a day like this, returning to Las Mimosas del Nalón feels like coming home.

You arrive with salty skin, eyes full of blue and green, and that quiet happiness that comes from well-lived days. Perhaps there's still time for a hot shower, a simple dinner, a quiet chat, or simply doing nothing at all.

And that is also our plan: to leave space for doing nothing. A perfect moment to enjoy on our viewpoint, with views of the Nalón estuary and San Esteban de Pravía.

Because at Las Mimosas del Nalón, we believe that travel isn't about filling your diary, but about emptying your mind.

Feed your senses. Live Asturias at a relaxed pace. Come home to Asturias.
