Most importantly: access is regulated for much of the year

One of the most common mistakes is thinking you can always drive up. In reality, access is regulated for much of the tourist season to protect the natural environment.

During periods of regulation, the road between Covadonga and Los Lagos remains closed to private traffic, and access is via shuttle buses, authorised taxis, or vehicles with special permits.

How to get to the Lakes when there are restrictions?

The most convenient option is to use the shuttle buses that depart from different designated points between Cangas de Onís and Covadonga. The ticket allows for stops during the journey and also permits a visit to the Covadonga Sanctuary.

Advice from Las Mimosas del Nalón

If you are travelling in summer, during Easter week, or over a bank holiday weekend, we recommend checking the regulation dates and booking your tickets in advance. This will help you avoid waiting times and start your excursion much more relaxed.

What to see once you're up there

Lake Enol

It's the biggest and the first one you'll find when you arrive. Its views towards the mountains are spectacular at any time of year.

Ercina Lake

Smaller and surrounded by meadows where cows and horses usually graze, it offers some of the most famous images of Asturias.

Entrelagos Lookout

One of our favourites. From here you can see both lakes and get some of the best photographs in the park.

Buferrera Mines

A simple and highly recommended route to discover the mining history of the area and enjoy impressive panoramic views.

What to bring

The weather in the Picos de Europa can change quickly, even in summer.

We recommend:

  • Comfortable footwear or hiking boots.
  • Lightweight jacket or windbreaker.
  • Sufficient water.
  • Sun protection.
  • Camera or mobile phone with a charged battery.
  • Time to relax without rushing.

An important recommendation

The Lakes of Covadonga are part of a protected natural area of enormous ecological value. The best way to enjoy it is with respect: stay on the marked trails, do not leave any rubbish, and avoid any behaviour that disturbs the environment.
