Lagos de Covadonga 2026: Everything you need to know before visiting

The Covadonga Lakes are probably one of the most iconic sights in Asturias. Lakes Enol and Ercina, surrounded by the mountains of the Picos de Europa, are one of those places you simply must visit at least once in your lifetime. From Las Mimosas del Nalón, many of our guests take a day out to explore this unique corner of the Principality, so we’ve put together this updated guide to help you organise your visit. Where are the Lakes of Covadonga? The Lakes of Covadonga are situated within the Picos de Europa National Park, in the municipality of Cangas de Onís. These are two glacial lakes, Enol and Ercina, situated at an altitude of over 1,000 metres and surrounded by some of the most spectacular landscapes in northern Spain. Before you arrive, be sure to pay a visit to the Virgin of Covadonga. The Virgin of Covadonga, affectionately known as La Santina, is one of Asturias’ most cherished symbols. Her image is housed in the Holy Cave of Covadonga, a place of great historical, spiritual and cultural significance, surrounded by nature and legend. Whether you’re a believer or not, a visit conveys a special sense of peace and connection with the history of Asturias. ✨ An unmissable stop before heading up to the Lakes of Covadonga and an experience best savoured at a leisurely pace. #AlimentaLosSentidos #TuCasaEnAsturias Most importantly: access is restricted for much of the year One of the most common misconceptions is that you can always drive up there. In fact, for much of the tourist season, access is restricted to protect the natural environment. During these restricted periods, the road between Covadonga and the Lakes is closed to private traffic, and access is via shuttle buses, authorised taxis or vehicles with special permits. *Source: Turismo Asturias How do you get up to the Lakes when there are restrictions? The most convenient option is to use the shuttle buses that depart from various designated points between Cangas de Onís and Covadonga. The ticket allows you to make stops along the route and also visit the Sanctuary of Covadonga. Tip from Las Mimosas del Nalón: If you’re travelling in summer, at Easter or during a long weekend, we recommend checking the dates of the restrictions and booking your tickets in advance. This will help you avoid queues and start your trip with much greater peace of mind. What to see once you’re up there Lake Enol This is the largest lake and the first one you’ll come across on arrival. Its views of the mountains are spectacular at any time of year. Lake Ercina Smaller and surrounded by meadows where cows and horses often graze, it offers some of the most famous views in Asturias. Entrelagos Viewpoint One of our favourites. From here you can see both lakes and take some of the best photographs of the park. Buferrera Mines An easy and highly recommended route to learn about the area’s mining history and enjoy stunning panoramic views. What to bring The weather in the Picos de Europa can change quickly, even in summer. We recommend: An important reminder The Lakes of Covadonga form part of a protected natural area of immense ecological value. The best way to enjoy it is to do so with respect: stay on the signposted paths, leave no litter behind and avoid any behaviour that disturbs the environment.
